In the sense of Giambattista Vico’s Homo Faber we are only able to fully comprehend what we would be able to construct ourselves. But the structures of nowadays’ society are no longer to be decoded without the use of computers and are not based on handed-down knowledge alone, but the collection and evaluation of data.
What if this present time, in which technical complexity has overcome peoples comprehension of the world they live in, could be encountered by means of design?
Entering the black- box is pretty easy. It just means we need to be eager to understand the technology we are using each and everyday. Only then we are able to use it autonomously, responsibly and openly. In the sense of object-related design, let's start with the 3D-printer. By research and experiment there are ways of using the technology in a creative way, that is only set to the limitation of its inner workings – the ones we are eager to understand. Browse my collection, and in case you are brave and want to work with me from inside the black box: with this template you can submit your experiments to be shared in the collection.
